αβWheelie v0.2 - Camera Panning, Title Screen and Tutorial
Just a small update this time. I updated the camera script to pan from left to right as Wheelie moves forwards, likewise panning the other way as he moves backwards. This allows the user to see more of the level in the direction they are travelling.
It was actually pretty straightforward to do, just linearly interpolating towards a target offset x coordinate for each frame while Wheelie is moving and inversing the target offset if there is a change of direction. Again this is another inspiration from Donkey Kong Country Returns which has a lot of subtle camera magic.
Also included in this release is the bare bones of a Title Screen and Tutorial. Initial feedback that I've gotten about the controls is that double-tapping Alfer to move backwards isn't intuitive. I'm hoping that a tutorial can help make that a bit more obvious as in a balance between intuitive controls vs responsive controls I'd like to edge towards responsiveness.
Bonus feature: small dust cloud particles emitted each time Wheelie moves. Still needs to be made a lot more pretty (as with the rest of the game) but it works as a starting point.
Next on the todo list:
- Parallax scrolling background (might be tricky as it looks like there's a bug in godot 2.1 if used in conjunction with camera zoom)
- Level completion logic
- Polish up the tutorial and title screen
Until next time, cheerio!
